When starting a dance or theatre company it is important to consider the community you will be working in as well as your participant group. First we must understand what community means; community being a collective group of people with a common ground. This common ground may be of a certain interest or location. In addition to this, community contains a variety of people from different backgrounds, age and gender. Community dance or theatre companies therefore are ‘creating opportunities for anyone, regardless of gender, race, religion, physical or mental health, and ability’. (Amans 2008, 4)
While thinking of certain groups of people within communities, I felt drawn to working with ‘Early Years,’ especially 4-7 year olds in my hometown community of Hitchin in Hertfordshire. My reasoning to do so is because children in my area does not seem to have much of an opportunity to experience extra-curricular activities.
